23.4.2010 IPC is going to continue

The creation of an effective remedy mechanism in northern Cyprus to prevent the flow of property cases at the European Court of Human Rights against Turkey was one of the major gains during the time of outgoing Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. Backed by Ankara, the Immovable Property Commission is expected to handle future cases during new President Derviş Eroğlu's tenure. A landmark on March 5th ruling from the European Court of Human Rights recognized the existence of an official institution of northern Cyprus for the first time. “The number of cases by Greek Cypriot applicants have increased in the wake of the key ruling. At present, there are approximately 500 cases the commission needs to handle,” Romans Mapolar, a member of the commission, told the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review. “With this verdict, Greek Cypriot applicants have to apply to the Immovable Property Commission or they have to wait for a solution to the Cyprus problem,” he said. The European court’s ruling was the first legal victory since the 1974 intervention. The commission, which is fully supported by Turkey, is expected to look into files and seek solutions under Eroğlu’s leadership.
